Long Beach Resident Anita Herrera Launches New One-of-a-Kind, Non Profit called Synaap.org --an interactive social media tool to provide students with the information, access to mentorship and the encouragement needed to stay on track with their educational goals

Long Beach, CA, February 20, 2015 - Upon arriving as a freshman on the campus of UCLA, a young Anita Herrera wondered: Do I really belong here? As the first in her family to attend a four-year university, Anita lacked a roadmap to help her negotiate the rigorous academic environment. And then, during her first quarter of study, her beloved grandfather died suddenly of a heart attack.


“Just hours before he died he held my hand and said, ‘Love God and keep studying.’ Those words became my life’s motto,” Anita said. “During the times when I had very little financial or emotional support, I clung to those words.”

Fast-forward a couple decades. Anita Herrera became Dr. Anita Herrera Hamilton a board certified pediatric neuropsychologist at Children’s Hospital, Los Angeles. Having attained her educational goals she wants to empower the world to do the same. Literally. Hamilton has launched a one-of-a-kind, website called Synaap.org, an interactive social media tool to provide students with the information, access to mentorship and the encouragement needed to stay on track with their educational goals.

The idea behind Synaap.org is to establish a national and then global network of collaborative mentorship that is convenient, efficient and accessible to anyone in need of educational support.

Hamilton believes that mentorship is a fluid, organic, collaboration of supportive team members, and each mentor brings a unique perspective and role. At Synaap.org, some will focus on academics, others will provide insight geared toward personal or professional development. The goal is to encourage others to optimize their hard work, knowledge and personal life experiences.

“Because of Synaap.org, future leaders no longer have to feel isolated or alone in their educational journey,” Hamilton said. “They will be able to see, know and interact with others like them, or who started out like them, and through these interactions achieve their educational goals then turn around and do the same.”

Hamilton completed her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature at UCLA (1996) and her Ph.D. in clinical psychology with an emphasis in neuropsychology at the Fuller School of Psychology in Pasadena (2005). Following residency at Children’s Hospital Colorado and a post-doctoral fellowship in pediatric neuropsychology at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Dr. Hamilton received board certification in Clinical Neuropsychology from the American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology. She is currently CHLA’s Director of Neuropsychology at the Children’s Orthopaedic Center.

Dr. Hamilton envisions 5,000 members within Synaap.org’s first year, increasing to 20,000 the second year, and 100,000 in the third year. Future goals include: providing information resources from local and national experts via the site’s “Fuel,” “Balance” and “Inspire” tabs; hosting/streaming local and national leaders speaking to others about education and professional development; obtaining advertising contracts to cover financial costs and overhead; initiating a Synaap app that allows members log their education, exercise and nutrition progress and then analyze this data to modify behavior and realize success; and opening a Synaap.org headquarters as the website becomes THE social media tool for all mentorship organizations, with global input from all seven continents.

In the end, Hamilton hopes Synaap.org members are able to have goal-focused and solution-oriented interactions that instill and promote professional development.

No one knows more than Hamilton how inspiration is the genesis of learning, and how learning is the path to joy and fulfillment.

“Synaap.org provides an efficient mechanism for busy professionals to encourage and mentor future leaders,” she said. “When we give to others we stay relevant and innovative and in the end really benefit ourselves.”

Residents at retirement communities around the country find love in their golden years

Lake Oswego, OR, February 10, 2015 — As Valentine’s Day approaches, seniors across the country who have lost their sweethearts are finding love again—but this time, it is with fellow residents in senior living communities. When introduced into a community of similarly aged seniors – many of whom have already raised families or had long-lasting marriages – these individuals are falling in love. Cheryl, 58, has called Village Gate her home for five years and is active in the retirement community’s glee club. When Jim, 69, moved in and joined the glee club, he only had eyes for Cheryl, and friendship quickly turned to romance. This senior couple will tie the knot this Valentine’s Day at the senior living community.

3. A city boy and a farm girl find love at Edgewood Downs in Beaverton, Oregon
John, a 90-year-old city boy from San Francisco, met Fran, an 82-year-old farm girl from Iowa, when she bluntly asked what his name was while waiting for the elevator. This moment was the start of a beautiful senior romance; the two began dining together and have been inseparable ever since.

4. Cupid strikes when you least expect it at Edgewood Downs
Neither 72-year-old Judy nor 80-year-old Asher expected to find their sweethearts when they each decided to move to the local independent senior living community. However, Cupid had other plans. After sharing their first dance at Edgewood Downs’ Valentine’s Day Celebration in 2014, these two lovebirds will celebrate their one-year date-anniversary on Saturday.

5. True love strikes at Madrona Hills in Salem, Oregon
Jim, 73, moved into Madrona Hills and was depressed after losing his wife; then Jim met Dina, a spry 79-year-old fellow resident, on a bus trip and his spirits were lifted. The two say they have found true love and enjoy spending time together dancing, shopping, and going to the Elks Club.

While being “young and in love” is something many people yearn for, there is something to be said for the growing number of seniors who are finding love years after they originally thought it was no longer in their life plan. The New Monterey County Operation Launches Flagship Brew Mad Otter Ale

Monterey, CA, February 09, 2015 - Demand for quality craft beer has never been greater, especially in California, where the micro-brew concept was born in the 1960s.

To keep up with that demand, small-batch beer production in the state increased by more than half a million barrels in 2013 — and 108 new craft breweries opened their doors and their kegs.


Embracing this surge of suds is Monterey Bay Brewing Co., a new operation in Monterey County that produces fine ales and craft beers. Mad Otter Ale is the company’s flagship brew, made in small batches by its founders, former accountant Mark Fitch and former real estate agent Scott Coming.

The two friends always shared a love of beer. After attending the Mammoth Mountain Blues and Brews Festival a few years ago, Mark camped out at the two-day event and experienced how everyone was going “mad” over craft beer. The friends attended together the next year and knew they wanted to bring that kind of energy and excitement for craft beer to southern Monterey Bay, an area where they sensed a void of quality craft beer.

They started to homebrew out of their kitchens, and one early evening on a golf course the name Mad Otter Ale popped into Mark’s head. From that light-bulb moment the two have expanded the business, putting their beer into kegs and cans and building community relationships with bar and restaurant owners.

“From that point on we knew we had something special,” Mark said. “Our passion is to provide high quality ales to this area while having fun doing it.”

The first year of brewing proved so successful that they have nearly tapped out their current production capacity. Mark and Scott hope to double the amount of beer they produce in 2015, and are also laying the groundwork for establishing their own facility.

“We currently are focusing on the quality of our flagship pale ale, but are always toying around with what we would like to produce next,” Mark said. “Our loyal customers have lots of ideas of what that should be and we are always happy to get their input.”

Monterey Bay Brewing Co. became the first local craft brewery to can its beer, which is a growing trend in the industry. More than 500 craft breweries across the country now can their beer, accounting for 20 percent of the 2,500 small-batch breweries in the U.S. The canning boom took place in remarkable fashion, from just a few dozen to 500 in just two years, thanks in large part to the ease of packaging and a lower cost than bottles.

Mad Otter Ale has already made numerous appearances at local events, most recently the Big Sur Foragers Festival. At Twisted Roots, we believe in letting the grapes speak for themselves.  Partner Josh Ruiz, representing partners Ross Schmiedt and Mike Hodge, stated that, “We feel that our work in the vineyard is the genesis for the flavor and overall complexity of our wines.  As Lodi Certified Green Growers we follow sustainable farming practices throughout the entire winemaking process.”

The certification of Twisted Roots as a green grower includes two components: The Lodi Rules practice standards, and a Pesticide Environmental Assessment System that measures the impact of all organic and synthetic pesticides used during the year. The vineyard is audited annually by a third party to verify farming practices, and may not exceed a maximum number of points calculated using the system.

Among the Certified Sustainable Practices are the following:
Integrated Pest Management: Twisted Roots limits crop protection to only essential measures, and creates and maintains a habitat for natural enemies of certain pests. For example, the family plants specific types of grasses in its “1918” Old Vine Zinfandel vineyard to help attract beneficial insects.

Air Quality Control: Twisted Roots plants cover crops of native grasses in and around its vineyards to minimize dust, and limits tractor usage to reduce air pollution and conserve energy.

Land Stewardship: The family integrates the management of the vineyards with the ecosystem by providing riparian zones, maintaining vernal pools, protecting wildlife habitat, and installing nesting boxes for birds and bats. To combat a growing problem of coyotes chewing up irrigation pipes, workers began leaving buckets of water for the coyotes. Now the coyotes eat the rodents, leaving the irrigation alone.

Water Management: Vineyard workers constantly monitor soil moisture and measure the vines’ water needs. They regulate waterusage through careful irrigation scheduling, and constantly maintain and service irrigationsystems to ensure maximum efficiency.

Soil Health: Believing that healthy soil leads to great wines, Twisted Roots adds organic matter by planting cover crops and by utilizing compost. Experts control fertilizer and irrigation to maximize nutrition in the soil, which results in higher quality, more concentrated fruit. Each year analysts run soil and plant tissue tests to determine the needs of the vineyard.

Human Resources: People are the foundation of great sustainably grown wines. Twisted Roots workers receive comprehensive training and development that enables them to perform their jobs safely and maximize their ability for year-round employment.

The Twisted Roots family creates a sustainable vision for the farm that provides the foundation for sustainable winegrowing. This philosophy helps ensure the long-term health, biodiversity and productivity of the farm and the surrounding ecosystem. All of the Twisted Roots’ farming practices can be evaluated to determine whether they move the vineyard toward or away from this vision.

Twisted Roots Story:
Centered in the heart of the Lodi Appellation, Twisted Roots Vineyard is the work of three generations of family members dedicated to the practice of growing great wine grapes by following sustainable growing practices. While our vineyard was established in 1918, it wasn't until recently that we began producing our own wines.

The Twisted Roots Vineyard label started with a Petite Sirah in 2005 by Ross, after experimenting in the basement of the original farmhouse. In 2009, we began commercial production and expanded our offerings to include other varietals grown on the estate.
