CELEBRATION ’69, a multimedia, rock and roll experience featuring live music, images and storytelling, is back by popular demand. The show will hit the stage again July 12, 13 and 14 in the Morgan Stock Theater at Monterey Peninsula College as a benefit for the MPC Theatre Company Charitable Trust. Performances start at 7:30 on the 12th and 13th, and at 2 pm on Sunday, the 14th. VIP Experience tickets are available for the Friday evening performance.

CELEBRATION ’69, which played to sold out audiences earlier this year at Hartnell College, celebrates the Golden Anniversary of 1969, the single most amazing year of the 20th century. The show focuses on stories about six of the year’s most iconic historical events, including, among others, Woodstock, the Apollo 11 moonwalk and the Manson family murders. As transitional links, a live band on stage plays medleys of songs released that year including hits from Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Cream, Santana and more. And all the while, visual images, both historical and musical, bring the era back to life.

Mark Shilstone-Laurent, the show’s creator and lead singer for the on stage band says of the show, “We try to recapture the essence of that crazy year by flooding the stage with music and images and stories. And although this thing may LOOK like a play, it’s definitely more of a party. We’ve chosen songs we think audiences will be familiar with and we encourage them to sing along whenever they like. And if the performances earlier in the year at Hartnell College are any indication, audiences aren’t the least bit shy about joining in!”

The show features photos from the collection of rock photographer/journalist Stephen Robert Caraway who passed away in 2015 but left a treasure chest of iconic images from rock and roll’s biggest stars dating all the way back to 1967. The show is a memorial to Mr. Caraway’s photos as well as his spirit that never really lost track of what the 60’s tried to be all about - peace and love.

Again, Shilstone-Laurent, “Although CELEBRATION ’69 plays right into the wheelhouse of the Boomers who lived it, it’s a show for anyone who may be curious as to why the 60’s and its music are considered such a big deal - or for history buffs that understand just how crazy unique 1969 was, and want to relive it both musically and historically.”

For reservations, go to mpctheatre.com. Or you can call the box office at 831-646-4213. For more information and to view photos from the Hartnell performance in February, go to celebration69.com.

Big Sur Foragers Festival Dates Announced: January 16 – 19, 2020

Foragers Festival Fungus Face Off to be Held at Big Sur River Inn Saturday, January 18, 2020

Big Sur, CA, May 24, 2019 - The historic Big Sur River Inn serves as the host and backdrop of one of the Big Sur Foragers Festival's most popular events, the "Fungus Face-Off," set for Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020.

Confirmed Partners

Wineries:
Bernardus Winery
Chappellet
Mesa Del Sol

Chefs:
Big Sur River Inn
Montrio Bistro
Rio Grill
Tarpy's Roadhouse

The Face-Off at the River Inn, set under the oaks overlooking the Big Sur River, features celebrated local chefs competing for the best foraged dish, and will include food tastings, fine wines, craft beers, raffles, a silent auction and more.

This event sells out early, and tickets will be on sale through EventBrite starting July 2019.

The River Inn has a significant presence in Big Sur history and lore. The inn's history goes back to 1888, when Jay Pheneger acquired a 160-acre parcel from the federal government and gave his name to the creek that bounds the River Inn on the south.

Homesteaders Barbara and Michael Pfeiffer bought the property, and in 1926, Michael, and Barbra's son John took over the land on which the Big Sur River Inn now stands. The inn was opened in 1934 by his daughter Ellen Brown. She opened her living and dining rooms to the public and began serving hot apple pie, which is still served today and gave the place its first name, Apple Pie Inn. Lodging units were built and Big Sur's first resort was established.

In 1943, Ellen's sister, Esther Pfeiffer Ewoldson and her husband, Hans, took over the operation. Esther replaced her mother as Big Sur Postmaster and the Post Office was moved to the River Inn, situated where the front office of the motel is now.

With a lot of help, Hans built the General Store and lodging units 10 through 15. He rebuilt the dining room and "fixed it up fancy."

The Pfeiffer and the Ewoldson families started a tradition at the Big Sur River Inn of fine food, excellent service, and warm hospitality. In 1988, the Perlmutter family, along with a small group of close friends, formed a partnership to carry on that tradition.

For the second year, the Big Sur River Inn extends its tradition of hospitality to host the Big Sur Foragers Festival.

The Foragers Festival has traditionally served as a fundraiser for the Big Sur Health Center. The community's non-profit health center will receive the proceeds from the foraging events to continue to support the presence of local health care services in the Big Sur area.

The four-day festival affords Big Sur area restaurants the opportunity to host the culinary expertise of notable chefs, who will be preparing unique fare ranging from rustic to elegant, paired alongside the central coast region's amazing selection of wine and beer.

In addition to the Fungus Face-Off, events will include:

A Thursday Night Fundraiser at Lugano's Swiss Bistro. Details to come.
Friday night winemaker's dinners as locations around Monterey County include Il Grillo in Carmel-by-the-Sea
Saturday Foraging walk led by local experts. "Wild Mushroom Walks and Talk"
Sunday we are finalizing several brunch fundraisers around Monterey County.
Stay tuned for more details coming soon. For event details and venue information, visit www.bigsurforagersfestival.org.

Café Fina Restaurant on Fisherman’s Wharf will celebrate its 30th anniversary this summer!

One of the Monterey Peninsulas most renowned and cherished restaurants turns 30 this summer.

Salinas, CA, May 22, 2019 - One of the Monterey Peninsulas most renowned and cherished restaurants turns 30 this summer. Café Fina on Fisherman’s Wharf will celebrate its 30th anniversary this June 28th. Family recipes passed down from grandmother to mother are still used at Café Fina to provide an authentic Italian seafood experience right here in Monterey. In this Italian cuisine, fresh fish and homemade pasta has been the main course since 1989.

Owner Dominic Mercurio remembers playing and working on the wharf since he was just a child, “a bunch of us used to come down her every day in the summer time. We were 10 or 11 and would leave home in the morning and not go back until dark.” “My father Jean introduced my brother and I to the fishing industry and shared everything we knew. We are proud to continue his legacy.”

Some years later, Dominic opened his own Italian seafood restaurant in Monterey, naming it after his mother Josephina.

Dominic’s excellent cooking has enabled him to be the sole caterer for John Madden’s induction ceremony into the Football Hall of Fame in 2006. Dominic has earned visits from Rachel Ray, the Hillstrand Brothers of the Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch and other TV, Movie and Sport stars including the great Joe DiMaggio. Bonny Doon, CA, May 21, 2019 — Renowned florist and floral designer Teresa Sabankaya, founder and owner of Bonny Doon Garden Company, will release her first book in May and hold several book-signings and events over the course of several months in 2019.

Sabankaya’s book, “The Posy Book,” which was released Tuesday, May 7 on the Countryman Press imprint, explores one of her favorite topic, posies, a garden-inspired flower arrangement that conveys a message in the language of flowers.

Her book-signing tour includes the following:

In “The Posy Book,” Sabankaya, founder and creative director of Bonny Doon Garden Company, a full service floral design studio, Santa Cruz florist and botanical gift shop, shares what has become her signature — posies. Inspired by the Victorian-era language of flowers, a posy is a small, round bouquet of flowers, herbs, and plants meant to convey a message, such as dahlias for gratitude, sunflowers for adoration, or thyme for bravery; she shares her favorites for every occasion.

Sabankaya's trademarked creations, Bonny Doon Posies, have been a core part of her retail business from the beginning, and have been featured in such media as CBS Sunday Morning, Romantic Homes magazine, San Francisco Chronicle, Santa Cruz Sentinel and The New York Times.

Founded in 1999, Bonny Doon Garden Company is a full-service floral design studio, florist, and botanical gift shop located inside New Leaf Community market in west side Santa Cruz.

Sabankaya holds an influential position as one of the most innovative florists in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her floral designs are highly desirable due to their unique style of arranging and elegant garden appeal. Her wedding florals have been featured in numerous wedding blogs and magazines including Smitten, Sweet Violet Bride, Style Me Pretty and Green Wedding Shoes.

She has been featured in Amy Stewart’s “Flower Confidential” book as well as her blog, and was featured “like a florist from 100 years ago” in the PBS documentary “Botany of Desire,” based on Michael Pollen’s bestseller “Botany of Desire.”

She is a Certified Green Gardener; a member of Slowflowers.com, an online directory of florists who source their materials locally; and Greatgardenspeakers.com.

The Countryman Press has a long history as an independent publisher. Now owned by W. W. Norton and Company, Inc., Countryman and its books continue to grow both in scope and number.

About the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History
In 1883, our museum opened its doors among the first wave of natural history museums in America. Naturalists of this era, such as John Muir And Louis Aggasiz, began a national tradition of hands-on science education and nature preservation. The museum has continued this tradition for 130 years. The museum’s mission is to inspire discovery, wonder, and stewardship of our natural world. It envisions a community of curious minds, engaged in discovering the natural heritage and cultural legacy that exist today on the Central California Coast. Month-Long Vacation Rentals Offer Many Advantages to the Discerning Traveler

Anyone who has stayed in a short-term vacation rental is well aware of the advantages of staying in a private home rather than traditional traveler lodging

Monterey, CA, May 06, 2019 — Anyone who has stayed in a short-term vacation rental is well aware of the advantages of staying in a private home rather than traditional traveler lodging — better price, more flexibility, more space, more choices, and so forth.

Those advantages are still applicable when one opts for a longer-term vacation rental, such as a one-month rental. Thirty days may seem a like a long time, but when you vacation in an area such as the Monterey Peninsula, a few days is certainly not enough to see and experience all the area has to offer.

The Vacation rental professionals at Monterey-based Sanctuary Vacation Rentals, which was founded more than 11 years ago and represents almost 100 homes across the Monterey Peninsula, specializes in both short-term and long-term rentals and have surveyed both renters and owners about the advantages and disadvantages of both.

“A quote from Annee or Josh could go here.”

Here are seven reasons to rent a one-month vacation rental:

1. You have a home base. It’s your home away from home. You can sleep in, go on an outing, shopping, sightseeing or whatever you want to do. There’s no check-out times. There’s no getting awakened by housekeeping knocking on the door. If you’re not feeling well, you can stay in for a day and rest and recuperate and not feel you’re missing out.

2. You only need to unpack and pack once. You can unpack everything you brought with you without having to worry about packing up in a day or two, giving you more leisure time. And you’re not living out of your suitcase.

3. You have more room and more time to use it. Vacation rentals have much more space than the average hotel room. There’s more room to stretch out, relax and use areas of the home you may not use if you’re only there a day or two. Plus, there’s usually more bathrooms and areas where you can get away from everyone else and have some quiet alone time.

4. You can choose the type of property with the amenities and comforts you want. Unlike many hotels, you can pick a home that has a hot tub, Jacuzzi or even a pool or one that comes furnished with outdoor swings, fire pits, and gas barbecue grills. Some homes even come equipped with beach toys, bicycles, surfboards and other recreational equipment.

5. You can save money. By grocery shopping and cooking your own meals “at home,” you can save money and use it on excursions and sightseeing instead of eating out every night. And if you want to eat out, you still have that option too.

6. You have more flexibility. You can plan longer excursions or short trips or do them in stages, knowing you have more than a day or two to experience them all. You can invite family and friends to visit on weekends or for a couple of days.

7. Finally, you can do all of the above in the location of your dreams. Vacation rentals give you more options than a hotel room, whether it’s a quaint Carmel cottage or a multi-room Pebble Beach mansion with an expansive view, you’ll be able to find something that fits your dream perfectly.

Carmel-based Lewis Builders’ Rebuild of 1960s House by Renowned Architect Takes His Design Esthetics Into 21st Century

Joseph Eichler was a renowned architect in the 1950s and ‘60s who was known for his clean, open, mid-century modern designs.

Carmel, CA, April 29, 2019 — Joseph Eichler was a renowned architect in the 1950s and ‘60s who was known for his clean, open, mid-century modern designs. But even an architect whose work was ahead of his time could use an update in the 21st century.

That was the design-and-rebuild challenge for designer-builder John Lewis of Lewis Builders in Carmel, California. He wanted to keep the design esthetics of Eichler, but update the look, feel and functioning of an Eichler-designed home from the 1960s perched on a hillside in Carmel with views of the ocean.

The challenges were many: the heating and ventilation system was poured into the concrete slab foundation and had pest intrusion. The floor plan was choppy — you had to walk through one bedroom to get to the other. The kitchen was crowded — you couldn’t see from the kitchen to the dining room nor to the ocean. Parts of the house were starved for natural light.

In addition, a crowded kitchen, a misplaced fireplace wall, and overgrown vegetation outside all hindered ocean views from this 1,600-square-foot house located a block and a half from the beach. An old patio arbor blocked natural light and felt crowded.

The challenge was to rebuild the house into a modern, well-equipped and well-lighted home yet still keep as much of Eichler’s design esthetic as possible.

“We pride ourselves on being able to accomplish any kind of architectural design, Victorian, Contemporary, Carmel Cottage, Craftsman, and so on,” said Lewis. “With this house, we wanted to pay homage to Eichler and do something he would do in 2020. He was pretty modern for his time, so we call this an ‘updated’ Eichler.”

Lewis and his team added a hallway, along with a slight bump out to the back that made three bedrooms out of two. Kitchen, living, dining, and foyer were all opened up with windows and skylights to bring the outdoors in.

Some of the solutions included:

•Original heating, and ventilation, system was removed and radiant floor heating installed.

•A hallway was added to make three bedrooms.

•Kitchen, dining and living room were opened up.

•Fireplace was moved, energy efficient windows installed, landscaping rejuvenated, all to maximize ocean views.

•Natural light was optimized in true Eichler style to bring the outdoors in with six skylights, four patio doors, two French doors, and glass transoms on both interior and exterior walls.

•An operable skylight above the shower, including a glass transom, to bring both light and fresh air into the interior master bath.

•Trimless interior windows and doors to enhance the clean, geometric lines, especially prominent in the glass hallway.

Some of the details of the rebuild:

•7.5-inch wide plank European oak hardwood floors

•Natural stacked stone walls flank kitchen walls, fireplace wall, and accented throughout

•Waterfall countertops and TV console in Calcutta quartz

•Caesarstone in raw concrete quartz countertops

•Appliances from Bosch, Bertazzoni, and Fisher & Paykel

•Custom cabinetry

•Radiant floor heating

•Curbless showers

•Six oversized skylights (one operable above the Master shower), four patio doors, two French doors

•Two outdoor living spaces totaling more than 800 square feet

“We wanted to use clean, simple lines and natural elements such as wood and to add a warmth and softness to the space,” said Lewis, who calls the design “organic contemporary.” “We honored Eichler’s design by keeping some of the main esthetics in place.

Lewis said he learned a lot about Eichler’s design sensibilities by working on the house.

“As a student of design, I’m immediately attracted to these types of homes,” he said. “I would do anything to learn from the masters like Eichler. So this was a close, intimate experience to work with this house and its design. It was enhanced with modern conveniences, while being true to Eichler’s Mid-Century Modern design elements. We believe Eichler would be pleased.”

The house is for sale and listed with Doug & Lisa Steiny of Sotheby’s International Realty (http://www.dougsteiny.com).

San Juan Bautista Design Firm Celebrates 15th Anniversary, Naming of New Partner

Founder and Creative Director Kathy Schipper and her San Juan Bautista-based graphic, web design and marketing agency, Schipper Design, have two big reasons to celebrate in 2019.

San Juan Bautista, CA, April 17, 2019 — Founder and Creative Director Kathy Schipper and her San Juan Bautista-based graphic, web design and marketing agency, Schipper Design, have two big reasons to celebrate in 2019.

Schipper Design celebrates its 15th anniversary and its Executive Vice President has been named a partner in the agency. Beth Welch, who has been with Schipper Design for almost six years, is now the Managing Director.

When Kathy founded Schipper Design 15 years ago in San Benito County, a hop-skip from California’s Silicon Valley, she immediately applied her signature style to her work. Not content to simply design, Kathy quickly set to work attracting and hiring fresh and innovative designers, digital creatives and marketing experts to the firm, building a well-rounded team equipped for collaboration.

“We are bringing Beth on as a partner so we can continue to deliver high-quality design and branding and continue our path for growth in marketing and design,” said Schipper, who now leads 15 full-time employees in a 4,000 sq. ft. studio in the heart of historic San Juan Bautista. “Beth has been instrumental in the company growth over the past five years. She brought a high level of agency experience and organizational leadership to Schipper Design.”

“Although our growth has primarily been referrals,” she said. “We always welcome new clients, and we are strengthened by new projects with our current clients. We have a commitment to be on the cutting edge of design and technical trends so our clients can benefit from our expertise. Wonderwall design and furnishings shop in Sand City hosts two fun-filled events in support of the arts

For home builder, designer and collector Mark Cristofalo, authenticity speaks for itself.

Sand City, CA, April 10, 2019 - For home builder, designer and collector Mark Cristofalo, authenticity speaks for itself.

“That’s what people respond to, the authentic, the intuitive, the creative,” said Cristofalo, co-owner with his wife Carina of Wonderwall design and furnishings showroom in Sand City.

Toward that end, the couple will hold two upcoming events at Wonderwall honoring creativity and the arts within a community where they’ve raised four children.

On Friday, May 10, Wonderwall will hold an appreciation reception for Pacific Repertory Theater from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sip wine, savor small bites and shop for a cause as the Cristofalos given back 20 percent of all sales to the Carmel-based theater company.

On Thursday, May 23, Wonderwall will host an art opening for acclaimed Carmel Valley contemporary artist Patricia Qualls, Ph.D, who will debut several of her large-scale, high-impact paintings (on display through Sept. 15).

The reception (from 5:30-8 p.m.) includes wine tasting, small bites, and a meet-and-greet with the artist, who will give a presentation titled “Why We Need Art in the Home.” Guests will have a chance to view and purchase her artwork.

Qualls’ art is represented by an international collection in Switzerland, and national collections in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Phoenix, Dallas and other cities across the country. Her work is also part of the George Blair permanent collection at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento.

Qualls believes strongly in the freedom of expression, and believes that, by unblocking our internal restraints, we can begin to relinquish the creative comparisons and competition that limit our own expressions.

Qualls can often be found painting in her studio/gallery Patricia Qualls Contemporary Art in Carmel Valley, a beautiful 1,200-square-foot gallery with 15-foot ceilings and a half dozen skylights that bring sunshine to each of her high-impact, large-scale paintings.

There is great synergy between the artist and Wonderwall, blessed with a 3,000-square-foot space filled with antiques, art, furniture, furnishings, home décor and architectural elements. Every piece in the showroom has been unearthed by the Cristofalos, with an eye toward their uniqueness, originality and appeal.

“Wonderwall is a word I’ve always loved,” said Mark. “That’s what Wonderwall means to me, it’s a wall between the ordinary world and the extraordinary world. We try to build the extraordinary here that transcends the normal into a beautiful space.”

Carina believes our homes should be filled with things we love.

“We love to create beautiful sanctuaries,” she said. “And it may only be one piece that completes a look, a reflection of yourself. We’ve tried to find the one piece that defines that room, that defines that space.”

To attend the free events at Wonderwall, RSVP to Marci Bracco, marci@chatterboxpublicrelations.com or 831-747-7455.

The Museum is a catalyst for conservation and a valued learning resource in this region, facilitating active inquiry for all ages.
