$1 Million Grant from Stabler Foundation to Fund Scholarships at Harrisburg University

Harrisburg University of Science and Technology has received a $1 million grant from The Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation.

Harrisburg, PA, February 24, 2012 - Harrisburg University of Science and Technology has received a $1 million grant from The Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation. The grant will create the new Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Endowed Scholarship Fund at the private university, which will aid students who meet financial need and academic requirements, and have demonstrated a commitment to leadership and service.

This grant will enable the University to provide talented students far greater access to an HU education and ensure that graduates will enjoy the high-paying, high-growth careers that a STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) education can provide, says Dr. Mel Schiavelli, president of Harrisburg University.

“The creation of our first endowed scholarship fund is a transformational day for Harrisburg University and for the countless number of students who will benefit in the coming years from this grant," says Schiavelli. "We are grateful to the Stabler Foundation for this grant and for their belief in our students and our mission. Thanks to the unparalleled generosity of supporters like the Stabler Foundation, our students are receiving a gift of opportunity, a gift that will endure, and a gift for the future of Central Pennsylvania."

With this grant, the Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Endowed Scholarship Fund will in perpetuity provide need-based financial aid to students.

The first recipients will enter Harrisburg University this fall. Scholarship recipients will be required to do their best to “pay it forward” to future HU students. They will sign a moral pledge to begin contributing to the University’s Stabler Endowed Scholarship Fund within five years of graduating or completing military service, or after repaying any legally binding educational loans.

"The Stablers believed that the recipients of financial assistance should recognize an obligation and be encouraged to return that which they receive so others, in turn, may receive similar assistance. The pledge will help to ensure that the Stabler Endowed Scholarship Fund will continue to grow over time and help college students recognize the value of philanthropy long before graduation," says Ryan T. Riley, associate vice president of development and alumni relations at Harrisburg University.

The Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation was established by Mr. and Mrs. Stabler in 1966 and provides grants exclusively for charitable, religious, scientific, literary, or educational purposes. Generally, grants are only made to organizations and institutions that are located, or provide their primary services, in Central or Eastern Pennsylvania.

One of the key figures in guiding the growth of Pennsylvania’s renewable energy sector will give the closing remarks at the BioEnergy Summit at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology.

Harrisburg, PA, January 27, 2011 -- One of the key figures in guiding the growth of Pennsylvania’s renewable energy sector will give the closing remarks at the BioEnergy Summit at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology.

Daniel J. Desmond, former Deputy Secretary for the Office of Energy and Technology Deployment at the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and now a partner in Peregrine Technology Partners, a Pennsylvania firm started in late 2008 that works on development and commercial deployment of environmentally beneficial technology, is joining the list of speakers at the event.

With its theme of Innovative Technologies for an Energized Future! the March 15th BioEnergy Summit at the University will explore innovative technologies for bioenergy production and technologies for producing energy from wastewater. Additionally, the commercialization of technologies, nanotechnology-based solutions and processes used to produce bioenergy from a variety of biomass resources also highlights this half-day program.

Sponsors of the event include OriginOil, the Lehigh Nanotechnology Network and Lehigh University.

Desmond served the Commonwealth for nearly two decades and helped guide the growth of Pennsylvania's renewable energy industry. He joined the Pennsylvania Energy Office in 1983 and served as its executive director until its merger with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) in 1995. From April 1995 until his appointment as DEP deputy secretary for energy and technology deployment in 2003, he chaired the Pennsylvania Energy Resources Center, an advocacy and public education initiative to secure funding for renewable energy in the aftermath of utility deregulation. He also served as president of Sustainable Systems Research, a Lancaster-based firm specializing in the development and commercialization of environmentally beneficial technology. In his position as DEP deputy secretary, Desmond was responsible for fostering the deployment and use of innovative environmental and advanced energy technologies, including renewable energy. DEP's Office of Energy and Technology Deployment works with citizens groups, businesses, trade organizations, local governments, and communities to help them understand and adopt pollution prevention and energy efficient practices.

Keynote speaker for the event is Dr. William Goldner of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). He will give an overview of the strategic thinking and programs USDA NIFA and other USDA agencies are using to address the sustainable production of biofuels, biopower, and biobased products. The programs include: regional systems-oriented programs that integrate research, education, and extension/outreach/ technology transfer; pre-commercialization R&D for small businesses; and grant and loan guarantee programs for demonstration and commercialization.

Dr. Goldner will provide some examples of how businesses may use these programs to take part in this important renewable energy sector.
