Long Tan is a village in Ba Ria Vung Tau Province, Vietnam. When it was part of South Vietnam, it was part of Phuoc Tuy Province. It is renowned for its rubber plantations and is home a very small population of roughly 1,200 people.
The Battle of Long Tan is arguably the most famous battle fought by the Australian Army during the Vietnam War. The battle took place from August 18-19, 1966 and was fought in a rubber plantation near the village of Long Tan, about four kilometres northeast of Vung Tau.
The action occurred when D Company of the 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR), part of the 1st Australian Task Force (1 ATF), encountered the Viet Cong (VC) 275 Regiment and elements of the D445 Local Forces Battalion. D Company was supported by other Australian units, as well as New Zealand and United States personnel.
The battle is often used in Australian officer training as an example of the importance of combining and coordinating infantry, artillery, armour and military aviation.

Later, travelers will drive past the location of the Horseshoe (access not permitted these days due to mining activity) and go to the DeCourtney Rubber Plantation, then pause to reflect at the Long Tan Cross before helicoptering back to Ho Chi Minh City where travelers will arrive at 17:00 and return by car to hotel.

National Competition Celebrates Older Americans Who Embrace Successful Living
Boulder, CO, May 30, 2012 - The Center for Productive Longevity (CPL), which serves as the bridge between people 55 and older and opportunities that enable them to continue in productive activities, is organizing a nationwide competition to select the best entrepreneur success story and inspiring life story from people 55 and older.
The Later-Life Story Contest begins on June 1, 2012 and ends on August 31, 2012 with the winner in each category selected by a panel of three independent judges. Each winner will receive $1,000 and a specially designed trophy. The best stories will be posted on the CPL website throughout the duration of the contest. The winners will be announced on October 1, 2012 and will be posted on the CPL website (ctrpl.org) under “Success Stories”.
CPL created the contest to stimulate discussion and dialogue about how people 55 and older can continue adding value to their extended lives in an era when they are living 30 years longer than people did at the beginning of the 20th century. The Later-Life Story Contest is intended to achieve three objectives:
1) Stimulate people to continue leading meaningful and rewarding lives after reaching the age of 55. Baby Boomers were acculturated to believe that when they reached a certain age (55, 60, 65), they were over the hill and out of the game. Many of them need to understand that, with their increased longevity, they have the opportunity to become entrepreneurs or lead inspirational lives.
2) Demonstrate that older people can remain productively engaged and live inspiring lives into their latter 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and beyond. There are 78 million Baby Boomers who began reaching traditional retirement age of 65 in 2011 and will continue to do so each year through 2029 at the rate of 4.2 million per year. These are people with experience, expertise, seasoned judgment and proven performance (referred to as EESP). Many of them have also acquired some accumulated wisdom. At a time when unemployment is high and economic growth low, creating a new business is a bright spot on a gloomy employment horizon. Stories about how older entrepreneurs have successfully taken the new-business route may stimulate others to do so. Stories about how people 55 and older have led inspirational lives may have a similar impact.
3) Change the pervasive national mindset that when people reach a certain age, they should move to the sidelines. This thinking encourages older workers to shed the wrinkles, hide the years, and pretend to be younger than they are. With people living substantially longer lives, Americans must recognize and find ways to enable this large and growing talent pool to continue adding value.

Helen Dennis is a nationally recognized leader on issues of aging, employment, and retirement. She has conducted research on these issues for organizations such as The Conference Board, AARP, UC Berkeley, and the U.S. Administration on Aging. Nationally, she has lectured extensively to the business community, professional groups, non-profit organizations, and government agencies.
Greg Merrill is President and CEO of the National Older Worker Career Center (NOWCC) and former Chairman of the NOWCC Board of Directors. The NOWCC is a national non-profit organization dedicated to promoting experienced workers as a valuable and critical component of the nation’s workforce. Since its establishment in 1997 NOWCC has, through hundreds of workers ages 55+, provided over 13 million hours of dedicated, experienced labor to federal agencies.
Fred Mandell is a catalyst for personal change and co-author with Kathleen Jordan of Becoming a Life Change Artist: 7 Creative Skills to Reinvent Your Life at Any Stage. Fred’s life and work has been featured in the Public Television Series “Boomers: Redefining Life After 50.” Fred currently serves on the Board of Directors of both the Life Planning Network and Discovering What’s Next.

International Center for Eating Disorders Recovery Expands Partial Hospitalization Program for Children and Adolescents to Address Rising Incidence of Eating Disorders in Young Patient Populations
Denver, CO, May 30, 2012 - In response to an increasing demand for child and adolescent eating disorders care, Eating Recovery Center, an international center for eating disorders recovery, has expanded its Partial Hospitalization Program for Children and Adolescents. With the opening of a new facility in Denver’s Lowry neighborhood, this 11-hour-per-day, family-based treatment program will nearly triple current capacity. Eating Recovery Center’s child and adolescent programs, which provide inpatient, residential, partial hospitalization and outpatient treatment to boys and girls ages 10 through 17, have been in high demand since the Center opened its Behavioral Hospital for Children and Adolescents in January of 2011.
The prevalence of eating disorders in adolescence and childhood has steadily increased in recent years. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, from 1999 to 2006, hospitalizations for eating disorders increased by 119 percent for children younger than 12 years.
“The growing need for eating disorders treatment programs with specialized expertise in managing the therapeutic and medical needs of children, adolescents and families is apparent,” said Ovidio Bermudez, MD, FAAP, FSAHM, FAED, CEDS, medical director of child and adolescent services and chief medical officer of Eating Recovery Center. “The expansion of the Partial Hospitalization Program for Children and Adolescents enables Eating Recovery Center to address this trend by providing comprehensive treatment to a significantly larger number of patients and families.”
Offering a critical stepping-stone in the eating disorders recovery process for young patients, the Partial Hospitalization Program enables patients and their families to participate in daily programming that emphasizes communication skills, relapse prevention strategies and healthy parent/child interactions. Through individual, group and family therapy and staff-supported meals, families begin to work toward returning to “life as usual” outside of their child’s structured eating disorders treatment environment. The overall focus is on recovery and well-being.
Patients participate in a combination of individual, group and family therapy emphasizing recovery skills and the role of families in lasting recovery. They engage with a licensed teacher at Eating Recovery Center’s Learning Center in the afternoons to facilitate a seamless transition back to school following treatment. While their child is in treatment, parents and family members receive twice-a-day education lectures and participate in support groups. Multi-family groups and family meals are also embedded in the weekly schedule to foster a supportive community for patients and family members.
“Our treatment philosophy recognizes the importance of family involvement, education and empowerment in the recovery process,” continued Dr. Bermudez. “Treatment programming acknowledges that many child and adolescent patients are too developmentally young to take full ownership of weight restoration, sustainable recovery skills and aftercare, and provides parents with tools to continue to facilitate recovery at home.”
When patients are medically and psychiatrically stable, the structure and support of 24-hour care environment is not necessary and there is willingness and availability among both patient and parents to engage in intensive outpatient treatment, the Partial Hospitalization Program can be a meaningful starting point for families to begin the recovery process. Alternatively, patients can step down to this level of care from Eating Recovery Center’s inpatient and residential programs for children and adolescents. In the latter instance, continuity of care is a priority and patients will retain the same treatment team throughout their full course of treatment.

Boston, MA, May 29, 2012 - The news that Luxembourg will be the first market to implement the Alternative Investment Fund Managers (AIFM) Directive has been welcomed by Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA).
The country’s officials said that legislation’s introduction would be made imminently and that it was hoping that the law will be passed by the government in Luxembourg “by the end of the year”.
AAA, an alternative investment advocacy group, claims that the legislation will help to further improve the reputation of alternative investment products and asset classes at a time when more and more people are opting for these kinds of investments.
“It’s great news that Luxembourg is taking a serious approach to alternatives and that it is doing what’s necessary to ensure that investors can have as much confidence in the alternative investment market as it does in traditional investments,” stated Anthony Johnson.
A legal expert in Luxembourg, Jacque Levinger, told the Financial Times, “If implemented by the end of this year, it will give the industry around six months to fully comply. It is important all participants have time to understand how to comply.”
The legislation is set to increase fund managers’ ability to offer alternative asset classes to investors who may be wanting to diversify their portfolios. “This is very popular at the moment," added Mr Johnson. “People know that equities are very volatile and are keen to invest in tangible assets such as precious metals, real estate and forestry to try to reduce the risk in their investment portfolio.”
AAA supports a range of alternative investments and is a particular advocate of ethical investment options that are socially and/or environmentally responsible. It supports forestry investment through firms like Greenwood Management that run sustainable plantation of non-native species of timber in Brazil, Canada and Costa Rica. There are new models of timber investment on offer these days, with firms like Greenwood Management leading the way.
Bainbridge Island, WA, May 26, 2012 - Those interested in forestry investment may be put off of the asset class due to misconceptions that one has to wait over a decade to see returns. Forestry Research Associated (FRA), a research and analysis consultancy, claim that this is not the case with a new model of timberland investment offered by firms like Greenwood Management.
Those hoping to invest in sustainable forestry projects can now hand over as little as EUR10,000 and buy themselves a direct investment in sustainable plantations in Brazil, Canada and elsewhere. The model involves investing in existing plantation projects, while the forestry management firm use your cash to expand and develop their plantations, explained FRA’s analysis partner, Peter Collins.
He added, “It’s quite simple, the investor’s cash buys him or her a section of plantation – so they have a tangible asset in exchange for their money. However, this model differs as the investors start to see returns as soon as any mature trees are harvested a sold.”
FRA said that direct investment in forestry can sometimes put people off as they feel they will have to wait until the trees they own have reached maturity, which can take 10 to 15 years. However, those investing in existing plantations through firms like Greenwood can start to see returns much sooner.
Despite the differences in return schedules, those investing in forestry through this model can enjoy the same benefits that those buying up forestry land directly can enjoy. Mr Collins claims that investors can be safe in the knowledge that they are diversifying their portfolio with a forestry investment and that timber prices are not correlated with general economic indicators.
“Timber as an investment tends to hold up even when stock markets are plummeting,” added Collins.

Boston, MA, May 26, 2012 - The real estate market in the US could be worth investing in again, according to Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA).
The alternative investment advocacy group said that recent figures show that house prices are increasing once more and that now could be a great time to invest in real estate in the US.
“The green shoots that are starting to show in the market indicate that the trend is for prices to rise steadily – suggesting that now is the time to grab a bargain,” stated Anthony Johnson, AAA’s analysis partner.
His comments followed the publication of new figures from the Commerce Department, which showed sales grew by 3.3 per cent in April, compared with sales in March. House building is also up, according to the figures, which showed that new housing starts increased to an annualized rate of 717,000 new homes per year, which is the largest number since 2008.
The house building trend is partly being driven by the fact that buyers will generally want to build new homes rather than move into ones that are being sold as a distressed sale, which are likely to be in disrepair.
AAA is keen to promote alternative investments to those who want to diversify their investment portfolios against the risks involved in stocks, shares and bonds. “These traditional asset classes do not offer the stable options they once did and investors are increasingly aware that these markets are extremely volatile and they want to offset this with alternative investments, such as real estate,” explained Mr Johnson.
AAA is an advocate of alternative and ethical investments of all kinds, but it is particularly interested in highlighting impact investing options and forestry investment through projects such as those run by Greenwood Management in Brazil.
Greenwood offers investors the chance to buy up sections of sustainable plantation land and receive returns in the medium-term while enjoying the benefits of an asset class that is not linked to other economic trends.

Additionally, the Board of Trustees announced that it has appointed Eric Darr, Ph.D., interim president of the University effective July 1, 2012.
“It has been my honor to work with corporate, government, and community leaders, to help transform the concept of a four-year educational institution in Harrisburg they advanced in 1999 into a reality. This community has accomplished that which many thought could never be done. Working together, we have created an institution of higher learning that emphasizes the partnership between business and education to create workforce-ready graduates,” says Schiavelli.
Schiavelli guided the University from concept to its current $73 million Academic Center at 326 Market Street in Harrisburg. Founded in 2001, the University became the first science and technology focused comprehensive university chartered in Pennsylvania in a century.
During his tenure at the university, total student enrollment increased from 113 in August 2005 to 1,022 (approximately 400 full-time equivalent students) in September 2011. Schiavelli says any successes were a collective effort.

I believe that there comes a time when it’s appropriate to ask others to continue the work,” said Schiavelli. “This move is a ‘homecoming’ for me because I served at the nation’s second oldest college—The College of William and Mary in Virginia for 26 years. More than half of my professional life was spent in the Old Dominion where I still have many friends and colleagues.”
Begun in 1964, Northern Virginia Community College is the largest educational institution in Virginia and the second-largest community college in the United States, comprising of more than 75,000 students and 2,600 faculty and staff members. NOVA is also one of the most internationally diverse colleges in the United States, with a student body consisting of individuals from more than 180 countries.
A search committee will be appointed by Harrisburg University’s Board of Trustees to launch a national search to identify and interview potential candidates. The Board of Trustees will make the final selection with the goal to appoint the president by July 1, 2013.
“Eric arrived here before we had students and he has helped to build and grow the University from idea to reality. We are confident that he will provide excellent leadership to Harrisburg University,” said Dolan. “He has served as executive vice president and provost since 2007, and he is familiar with all aspects of the institution and with its many external partners. He has had primary responsibility for our academic programs and the recent growth in our enrollments. His experience will be essential as he guides the university during this period of transition.”
Darr earned both a bachelor of science degree in Mechanical Engineering and a master of science degree in Industrial Psychology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He also earned an MBA and a doctor of philosophy degree in Organizational Behavior and Theory from Carnegie Mellon University where he studied under Nobel Prize Winner and noted organizational theorist Herbert Simon.
While at the Anderson Graduate School of Management at the University of California at Los Angeles, he conducted research and consulted in over twenty multinational corporations including Arthur Andersen, Gemini Consulting, TRW Space and Electronics, Hughes Aerospace, Bank of America, Xerox, British Airways and Qantas Airlines.
During his career, he has developed and taught Doctoral and MBA courses in organizational learning, organizational change, organization design, process reengineering, business strategy and technology management. He has published numerous articles and book chapters on organizational learning, learning technologies and competitive advantage.
