In addition to all of the scams originating abroad that target American businesses--such as accounts payable and accounts receivable scams--there are many accounts of Americans being ripped off after they do business in foreign countries.

For example many Americans get lured to seemingly modern countries and asked to participate in business ventures. Scam artists are able to do this because some of those countries lack the legal protections available in the United States. For example, there is no SEC and no SEC disclosure rules to require companies to reveal details of their operations. Many companies do not have modern banking regulations so it is often easier to steal money placed in a foreign bank.

Another reason why con artists may try to lure Americans to do business in a foreign country is that the fraudsters often have local political connections. They may have friends or relatives in the local government who will protect them even if they commit blatant crimes against foreigners, whether these are Americans, British subjects, Canadians or Australians.

Fraud Overseas

A typical example of this was exposed by a lawsuit filed in a Florida court by New York attorney Howard Fensterman. Fensterman alleged that he and his clients were lured to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates to help organize an insurance company. To facilitate this deal they had to put $18 million in a UAE bank, yet the money was simply stolen from the bank. The investors filed suit in the U.S. to recover their funds.

This kind of fraud can occur even if you are lured to a foreign country by its government or prominent citizens. In some cases they may even be in on the scam.

Approaches to HIV Eradication

The various approaches to HIV eradication all address a problem, and that problem is the HIV reservoir. HIV reservoirs have been called the last hiding place for HIV within the body. The final step toward finding a cure against HIV lies in dealing with HIV reservoirs.

Toulon, France, August 30, 2011 - What can be done about HIV eradication? The advancements in scientific technology and medical treatments have made significant progress in managing HIV and making it a chronic condition in most patients; however, the next logical step toward a cure has been elusive. Researchers have been working hard for the past few years on closing the gap between manageable disease and functional cure, and several different approaches have been explored or are currently being discussed. While antiretroviral therapy (ART) has been effective against HIV virus out in the open bloodstream, there are pockets of HIV that lie dormant in cells until antiretroviral therapy ceases, which allow them to become active again. These pockets are called HIV reservoirs. The approaches to HIV eradication focus mainly on how to deal with these reservoirs.

Let's talk about some of the discussed approaches; seven of them to be exact. On one approach, ART is started before HIV has a chance to establish reservoirs. This normally takes place when a person is just infected with HIV (acute HIV infection), very early in the process. The hope is to stop viruses before reservoirs can be established. In another approach, ART is intensified greatly in order to stop completely HIV replication. An alternate strategy is to activate dormant T-cells so the remaining HIV reservoirs can be flushed out and eliminated.

There are also strategies that deal with preventing the virus from infecting additional cells directly. If the HIV reservoirs can't be eliminated, one approach involves keeping the reservoirs dormant forever, keeping the HIV from ever replicating again. This means finding ways to disable the virus's ability to replicate. Alternatively, a sixth strategy protects the uninfected cells from ever being infected. The seventh discussed approach attempts to strengthen the body's natural immune system when exposed to HIV, very much like how a vaccine works.

The various approaches to HIV eradication all address a problem, and that problem is the HIV reservoir. HIV reservoirs have been called the last hiding place for HIV within the body. The final step toward finding a functional cure for HIV lies in dealing with HIV reservoirs. The dormant viruses hiding in these places make it very easy for a person's viral load to increase dramatically if ART is stopped even for a short time. Therefore, in conjunction with ART, one of the known possible approaches for HIV eradication—or possibly approaches that haven't been thought of yet—will become increasingly important to develop and implement.

EFISDS (The European Federation of the International Society for Digestive Surgery) staged the first of a series of pilot online PG Courses. Through the VisInc PLC Vistime software, participants were able to simultaneously view, mark up, annotate and manipulate the various media including large 3D digital media in real time which as such set the scene for robust discussion on the various topics of interest.

The session lasted for 21/2 hrs and involved 20 participants throughout the world and was set up and facilitated through ESC using the Vistime collaboration technology. Vistime is a multi-file format, real-time 3D viewer for retrieval and viewing of large files, including medical imaging systems such as MRIs, scans and sonograms, over any Internet connection, including dial-up. The system allows physicians and patients to view and discuss 3D media including radiology images in an online meeting format.

New Study Show A Rise in Childhood Eating Disorders

Health, “Anorexia Affecting Young Children in UK: Statistics,” was particularly disturbing, with statistics on the rate of reported cases of anorexia or bulimia for children 5 to 15 years old in the UK.

New York, NY, August 26, 2011 -- Nutritionists often write about the obesity epidemic and how it is affecting children. An August 1 article on Yahoo! Health, “Anorexia Affecting Young Children in UK: Statistics,” was particularly disturbing, with statistics on the rate of reported cases of anorexia or bulimia for children 5 to 15 years old in the UK. Over the past three years, nearly 2,100 cases of these ailments were treated: 98 cases involving patients 5 to 7 years old, 99 cases involving 8- or 9-year-olds, almost 400 involving children ages 10 to 12, and more than 1,500 involving 13- to 15-year-olds.

The UK is not alone in facing this problem, and it’s very likely that the US has the problem on a comparable scale. In fact, the article pointed out that the actual numbers of cases are most likely higher than the study reported. Parents are faced with growing extremes of both dangerously overweight and underweight children.
