Last week JA Carlton’s “Heroes of the Line” Book-A-Month Giveaway announced its first winner. The giveaway will continue on a monthly basis through December with the final winner receiving a copy of all four Carlton books.
Austin, TX, September 06, 2011 - Last Thursday, on Facebook’s “Nick, of Time” page, author JA Carlton announced B. Nolan as the first winner of her “Heroes of the Line” Book-A-Month Giveaway.
The giveaway is part of Carlton’s “Heroes of the Line” child abuse prevention campaign. Carlton has pledged 30% of her personal proceeds toward the prevention of child abuse in America and is giving away a hard copy of the book of the winner’s choice as an award for joining the campaign via a purchase of any of her titles.
The selection of books include her psychological thriller “Broken”, a story inspired by actual events that follows a serial killer as he spirals out of control on his quest to confront the person who tortured him as a child.
“More than 98% of serial killers are created, frequently by the people closest to them. Most are made, not born. We can’t stop creating killers until we understand how most of them are made.” - JA Carlton.
Her sci-fi “Freedom Fighter” series, consisting of the currently available first installment, “Wednesday’s Child” and its sequel “Into the Fire”, takes an almost prophetic look at the results of the current American sociopolitical climate.
The series takes place in 2055 where the American nation is a 3,000 mile wide graveyard. 70% of the population has been eradicated by shadowy government agencies. It’s a modern day genetic cleansing program that has forced the remaining citizens to fight for their very survival against those who are supposed to protect them.
“The only reason I have to call it fiction is because it simply hasn’t come to light yet.” She says.
And finally, the “Heroes of the Line” series after which her child abuse prevention campaign is named.
The first book, “Nick, of Time” introduces the reader to Nick, and Frank Emerson, two young brothers who learn they are destined to lead a band of heroes in a war against the Living Dark and its sinister agents, the Schades.
The common thread among Carlton’s books is that the main protagonists (even Randy Custon, “Broken”s serial killer) have all endured horrific childhood traumas. Critics argue that Carlton’s writings are exceptionally graphic for little other purpose than ‘shock value’, and others claim the works a means to feed society’s desire for more and more gratuitous violence.
Carlton says, “I like to think they’re warnings to think about how our actions echo forward. But most importantly, a message of hope to victims that abuse can be overcome, and that in spite of it, survivors can be heroes if they choose.”
