A Fascinating History:
Camp Capitola was what founder Frederick Hihn called his new resort on the sheltered beach south of Santa Cruz in 1874. He patterned it after the popular European watering holes of the Victorian Age. In the half-century following the founding of Capitola, railroads reshaped the American landscape. By the turn of the twentieth century, the Southern Pacific Railroad was California's largest landowner and employer. In 1901, the company built a rail station in Capitola on what became known as Depot Hill and the rails of the Santa Cruz-Watsonville railroad provided a mode of transportation for those seeking relief from the heat of the inland valleys.
The original structure of Inn at Depot Hill was a working train depot well into the 1950’s that linked the San Francisco area to the beach resort communities along the Monterey Bay.
Awards Received/Guests:
In addition to achieving the coveted 4-diamond AAA designation, Inn at Depot Hill also has been named as one of the Top Ten Inns in the Country. It was also the recipient of the prestigious Mobil Four-Star rating in 2002.
